Educational Value

Sylvan Learning has 2 Centers throughout Region 4. As a current, established Educational Service Provider in the local area, Sylvan Learning has highly qualified teachers readily available to enroll students in courses, programs or camps to meet their educational needs that qualify for funding under the Ohio Revised Code Section 3310.70. Sylvan’s programs are taught in small group or 1:1 setting based on the individual need of the student. Sylvan Learning utilizes the Star Renaissance to assess students reading and math competencies pre and post instruction to assist in identifying the educational needs of the student, making informed decisions about instructional level placement, creating instructional plans for students, and capturing baseline data for evaluating student progress. The Star assessment is a timed, adaptive test of 34 multiple choice questions. Each student’s scaled score is used to place students in learning levels appropriate for their abilities and with peers at a similar level. The Star Assessment is Highly rated by the National Center for Intensive Intervention (NCII), used by over 34,000 schools and districts across the US and is on the Ohio list of Approved assessments https://education.ohio.gov/Topics/List-of-Approved-Assessments. Additional information can be found at https://www.renaissance.com/products/star-assessments/evidence. Upon identification of the most appropriate Sylvan Learning program for each student, the Sylvan Learning team will work closely with each student and family to establish a program schedule that best meets their needs. All programming will be provided at the Sylvan Learning Centers. Sylvan’s curriculum and delivery is aligned with current and research-based strategies for reading, writing, math, college readiness, and homework help. All curriculum is designed with scaffolding for each skill and uses spiral delivery, giving each student support and repetition to not only introduce and practice skills, but to make sure knowledge is retained over time. SylvanSync is Sylvan’s proprietary learning management system that delivers adaptive instruction and enables students to move through the curriculum at his or her own pace. Students are placed into the reading, writing, or math programs based on test scores, and from that point forward the learning path adapts to the student’s needs based on their performance on individual activities. As with all of Sylvan’s services, the teacher is at the heart of instruction. SylvanSync is delivered in a 1:1 or 3:1 student/teacher ratio, allowing for effective one-on-one time between the teacher and each student. SylvanSync collects student performance data at each lesson in real time, which determines what students will learn next. College Readiness programs at Sylvan support several aspects of the college application process. SAT and ACT Prep offers instruction designed to bolster content-area skills, as well as master test-taking strategies to maximize their test scores. Students will take up to four practice tests as part of their prep program and have access to online supports outside of the program. Finally, Sylvan’s Readiness program offers student and family support for the entire process. All tutoring services will address deficiencies in understanding concepts while making connections to core knowledge and help facilitate the completion of grade level coursework.
