Children who come after school arrive off of the school bus around 3:15pm each day. The kids come in, wash their hands, and sit for an afterschool snack. They then have time for free-play in our large indoor gym or our natural outdoor playground/classroom. The kids have about 30 minutes to play, before heading to our school-age classroom where they start out with silent reading for 15 minutes. In this time, they may also work on homework by themselves or with the help of staff or community volunteers. After reading and homework time is over, the children work in small groups at centers such as sensory bins, art, music, dramatic play, etc. During this time, children who need extra help on their homework can continue to work on that with staff members. After small centers, staff will organize large group activities that involve learning areas such as music, math, science, or art. The children start to depart to their homes after large group activities.
