Educational Value

Rhapsody Music Studio offers private piano lessons to students of ages 4 and up. Learning to read music is very much like reading another language. Music is a universal language that all can understand. Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French; and the notation is certainly not English - but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. Music is also mathematical in that it is rhythmically based on the subdivision of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper. Lastly, playing piano requires fantastic coordination of fingers and the hands. We work on balancing out melody louder than the harmony and shape phrases and use careful technique to create emotion in our music. Beginning students work to memorize note names and read rhythms accurately, as well as work on coordination between the hands. Dynamics (such as loud and soft, crescendo and decrescendo) take careful planning. Music requires one to be exact and we do so with great amounts of practice. Daily practice is recommended which is started at a young age. These young students learn discipline through their skills in music which will carry through to other areas of their learning.
