Educational Value

The Zanesville Museum of Art is a catalyst that ignites human imagination and understanding through the visual arts. Furthermore, its permanent collection, facilities, exhibitions, and public programs enhance the cultural life of the community and preserve its heritage. We empower our community through the visual arts. History: In 1933, the Zanesville industrialists and philanthropists Mr. Edward M. Ayers and Mrs. Klara K. Ayers envisioned a cultural institution in Zanesville, Ohio. With a population of 23,500 people, abundant natural resources, and rivers and railways to transport goods, Zanesville was the industrial center for art, utilitarian, and industrial pottery pro-duction. Large, notable manufacturers like the Weller, Roseville, and Owens pottery companies attracted distinguished artists from all over the country and England to work and live in Zanesville. By 1936 the Zanesville Art Institute (ZAI) was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ayers who donated art, a Renaissance Revival residence adapted for purpose, and an endowment. The Institute offered free admission, art classes, performance spaces, and exhibitions and displayed the Ayers’ collection of regional glass and ceramics and their collection of American and European paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. Over the next 40 years, the Institute remained the heart of the cultural community, and flourished despite the city’s post-industrial decline after World War II when most ceramic manufacturers closed. Eighty-six years later this institution, now called the Zanesville Museum of Art and located on Military Road in a modern 34,000 square foot facility, remains an arts and cultural cornerstone of this region. Annually, the museum welcomes on average 12,000 visitors, curates 6 thought-provoking exhibitions from its permanent collection of 8,500+ works of art, presents 4 temporary traveling exhibitions, and offers 170+ free and low fee public onsite and online educational programs for learners of all ages. In the last two years, the ZMA has placed its permanent art collection online and accessible to all. Zanesville Museum of Art Summer Art Camps: The ZMA is once again offering a four-week summer camp program that offers (7) seven unique 3 to 5 day sessions for children. Camps take place Monday through Friday in the museum’s education studio, galleries, and on the museum’s grounds. Structured lesson plans in alignment with Ohio learning standards, developed by ZMA education coordinator Misty Johnson and camp instructors, will be delivered by three seasoned, trained art education professionals. Camps will engage groups of approximately ten to sixteen students in hands-on activities that explore topics related to art, art appreciation, art history, and art-making techniques through exciting overall camp themes. Summer art camps provide children with opportunities to study artworks from the ZMA’s extensive collections, and they engage the students, hands-on, in the creation of art. Participants will explore a wide variety of art materials, create several original two- and three-dimensional works of art, and interact with new friends. Separate thematic camp experiences are available for ages 3 to 14 years; children can attend one or more of the week-long programs.
