Educational Value

The Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery (OVMoD, EIN 20-5062362) was founded in 2006 by a group of community leaders who believed that playful, hands-on learning with family and friends builds children’s confidence and resiliency for success as 21st century citizens. They believed that this learning was unique for each individual, occurring life-long with a richness that was life-wide and life-deep, beginning with the youngest of visitors. For these reasons, OVMoD was founded with a mission to inspire confidence in people of all ages to explore and discover the world. Southeastern Ohio is a rural region that is rich in natural beauty, strong cultural traditions, and supportive community connections. Leveraging these assets is essential in addressing the many challenges the region faces. Children in southeastern Ohio experience the highest rates of child poverty in the state, 25% are food insecure, and the region’s children are disproportionately impacted by the opioid epidemic. Access to out-of-school educational opportunities for children in the region is limited; additionally, recovery from the pandemic with a focus on the well-being of children has become a priority. OVMoD partners with schools and non-profits to provide learning experiences for children and their families. OVMoD recognizes the potential of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education to create further career prospects and to prepare learners for 21st century challenges and opportunities. At the same time, OVMoD recognizes the value of incorporating the arts and humanities into STEM education (STEAM). Since its founding, OVMoD has engaged more than 15,000 children and fostered their STEM discovery and confidence. OVMoD's summer camps and field trips offer numerous ways for students to explore interdisciplinary programming that bridges in-school and out-of-school learning.
