Educational Value

The mission of the Sandusky County Park District is to preserve natural areas for public appreciation, education, and recreational use. Throughout the school year we conduct numerous programs for our area schools. In a typical year we provide approximately 9000 hours of programming for students. All programs meet Ohio Curriculum Content Standards. During the summer months we focus on our Nature Camps. Our Nature Camps began in 2015, as 4-day nature camps for children 6 to 12 years of age. The first year we provided one session for three age groups; 6-8 (Littles), 9-10 (Middles), and 11-12 year olds (Bigs) for a total of 37 participants. Due to demand, we added additional weeks and sessions. By 2019 we saw an increase of 267% in our attendance and camp was expanded. We now provide 4 weeks of camp for 6-8 year olds, 1 week of camp for 4-5 year olds, and 2 overnights for 10-12 year olds. We have since increased our attendance to 250 campers for 2023. Activities conducted during camp included kayaking, exploring the creek, nature hikes, and crafts. Our intent is to show campers the importance the natural world and their connection to it. The Bigs (11-12) group is more adventure-based experience offering archery, rope climbing, and canoeing. All programming places an emphasis on hands-on exploration, stress k-6 curriculum content standards, and promote team work.
