Educational Value

Although we know technical skills are categorized as hard skills, The Two believes that basic technical skills of yesterday should be considered as functional soft skills today. The National Skills Coalition reports 92% of jobs require digital skills, yet many workers don’t possess the digital skills to thrive in today’s workforce. The Two offers basic computer science courses taught on the CodeHS curriculum platform which include Intro to Python, Intro to Java Script, Intro to HTML, Intro to the World of Computing, and Digital Citizenship to middle school students. Some of the courses we offer introduce students to geometry, but they mainly focus on the development of problem-solving and computational skills. CodeHS lessons were written to adhere to Computer Science Teacher Association standards but they coincide with ODE standards. For example, CSTA Standard 1B-AP-15 reads "Test and debug (identify and fix errors) a program or algorithm to ensure it runs as intended." Similarly, ODE Standard ATP.PD.6.a reads "Write code that utilizes algorithms, variables and control structures to solve problems or as a creative expression" and ODE Standard ATP.PD.6.b reads "Test and trace to debug and refine code." In addition to programming courses, CodeHS provides courses which will deepen students' knowledge of computing like its history, its inventors, is affect on the past and the future, cybersecurity, cyberbullying, and how the binary system functions. The Two understands our leadership course is not reimbursable, but it is a course we want to offer our home schoolers. Our Leadership 101 course is a soft skills awareness workshop. It is designed to make students aware of the traditional soft skills they need to develop during their secondary academic experience to be career ready. In this course students will learn to define the seven soft skills presented, recognize the importance of each soft skill, and start utilizing those skills to develop rapport with peers and authoritative figures.
