Educational Value

Sharon Renkes has provided private, high quality, multi-sensory piano lessons in central Ohio since 1987. She welcomes students of all ability levels and develops personalized lesson plans appropriate for each student's attention span and sensory needs. Students can begin lessons as young as age 5, after an interview and readiness assessment. Parents may always observe their child's lessons. The piano studio is open and affirming. Students and parents of all backgrounds are welcome. During a typical lesson the student will learn and explore the building blocks of music including scales and chords, rhythm, note reading, music structure, and dynamic expression. Ear training, rhythm instruments and body movement, an intro to music history and the beginning levels of composition with melody and harmony are incorporated into the lesson as needed and appropriate. Students explore various music styles and genres, including their personal preferences. Sharon highly values the sharing of ones music making ability. Music to be shared is selected by the student and learned with the teacher. Studio recitals of favorite pieces can be played by a student for family members. Small groups can give studio concerts of holiday music. And a student-created video of solo piano music is always a fun surprise for grandparents. Research proves that playing the piano can help students in many ways. Daily piano practice improves concentration and focus, eye-hand coordination, fine motor skills, singing voice and verbal memory. Listening skills, creativity, sense of timing and rhythm become sharper. Emotional benefits include a decrease in stress and anxiety along with an increase in perseverance, happiness, confidence and self-esteem. Learning to play the piano also has many social benefits for the student. You can play any style of music, live anywhere in the world, be of any ethnicity, and come from any background. Playing the piano brings people together and creates joy.
