Educational Value

I am a sole proprietor of private music lessons in my home studio, charging $25/30 minutes, $35/45minutes, and $40/hour. I have taught privately for over 30 years. I also teach for McCutcheon Music Studios, and have for approximately 15 years, charging the same rates as above, plus $5 each lesson which is a fee paid to the Studio. Students who take lessons receive personal attention to all of the fine details it takes to play an instrument: musicianship, posture, breathing, music reading, practice habits, time management, music technology, music theory, music history, and much more. I also run an after-school band program at the Dayton Regional STEM School. I am the band director. Parents pay me directly, I run the program, and the school simply allows me to use the building. Fees are $275 per semester ($550/year). Band students receive all of the services described in lessons plus they gain many skills from participating in a band: teamwork, tuning to other players, timing with other players, taking turns, counting rests, functioning as a group, performing as an ensemble 2-5 times/year, and more. I would like to provide Ohio’s ACE funding in each of these capacities. It is widely known that music enhances intelligence, memory, language, mathematics, coordination, and that colleges are aware of this and frequently prefer music students over otherwise equal competition when considering student applications and scholarships.
