Educational Value

At Sunbury Urban Farm, children ages 5-13 practice problem solving, communication, critical thinking, and compassion through hands-on, play-based outdoor learning. SUF conducts week long summer day camps, once-a-week school year programs (weekday options for homeschoolers and weekend options for traditionally schooled children), and single day school break camps on teacher work days and school holidays. Sessions are conducted primarily outdoors. Rain and snow don’t disrupt our day since most of our activities can take place no matter the weather. Some special activities are even reserved just for rainy/snowy days, so we get excited for precipitation! Indoor space is available in case of severe storms and a wood-fired warming tent is used in the winter. At farm programs, children participate in nature-based STEM learning activities facilitated by trained instructors, as well as child-led free time that allows children to explore personal interests at their own pace. Weekly/seasonal themes bring excitement and variety to farm programs. No matter the program they are signed up to attend, every child will participate in the following activities: -Nature exploration: ecology lessons like learning about habitats, food chains, and animal adaptations with games, scavenger hunts, and hands-on activities -Garden investigation: from botany to bugs and sun to soil, children will explore aspects of both living and non-living things in the garden -STEM Challenges: creative problem solving like egg-drops and tower building -Arts & Crafts: children will hone their creativity by making art with recycled and/or natural materials -Positivity Project: children will feel inspired to make a difference in their world. All participants will take part in an activity to make the world a better place, like creek litter clean up or a pollinator habitat expansion Informal verbal evaluations are conducted daily, giving kids an opportunity to reflect and review the content of the day. Formal written evaluations are conducted at the end of each session (sessions last 4-6 days).
